The Southeast Maritime and Transportation (SMART) Center is a consortium of educational and industry partners working to create a sustainable, globally-prepared maritime transportation workforce for the 21st century. Our educational partners provide programs and resources in Maritime Transportation and Technology to students in Virginia, Florida, and Mississippi. Our partner schools are:
Tidewater Community College
Tidewater Community College, founded in 1968, is one of twenty-three two-year colleges that make up the Virginia Community College
System (VCCS). Tidewater Community College has grown from a single location to four campuses (Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Virginia Beach), a Visual Arts Center in Portsmouth, and an Advanced Technology Center. The Advanced Technology Center offers an Associate in Applied Science Degree in Maritime Logistics, which takes a theoretical and a practical approach to the supply chain processes of distribution and transportation, supply chain management, purchasing, inventory and warehouse management, accounting, integrated logistics, and financial management. Graduates are prepared for employment and growth in the field of logistics management in the maritime and business environments.
Florida State College at Jacksonville
The mission of Florida State College at Jacksonville is to provide optimal access to high quality, affordable and relevant degree, career and community education to enhance the lives of our students and the economic development of Northeast Florida.
Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College
Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College serves students in the four-county district of Jackson, George, Harrison and Stone counties.
MGCCC provides programs and services designed for students who plan to seek a four-year degree, train for immediate employment, or transition to a new career. MGCCC offers an Associates of Applied Science Degree in Logistics Technology, designed to prepare individuals to manage and coordinate the procurement, distribution, maintenance and replacement of material and personnel. Graduates of this program are prepared for careers in Acquisition Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Distribution, Production Management, Logistics Engineering, Transportation, Materials Management, Maintenance Management, Configuration Management, Freight Forwarding and Third Party Logistics. Our industry partners ensure that the SMART Center produces qualified technicians by providing guidance in the skills graduates need to support maritime industry employers. Our industry partners are:

Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) designs, builds and maintains nuclear and non-nuclear ships for the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard and =provides after-market services for military ships around the globe. For more than a century, HII has built more ships in more ship classes than any other U.S. naval shipbuilder. Employing nearly 38,000 in Virginia, Mississippi, Louisiana and California, its primary business divisions are Newport News Shipbuilding and Ingalls Shipbuilding.
